Erfurt Christmas Market

One of the Most Beautiful Christmas Markets in Germany

Advent Cannot Get Any More Beautiful Than This

The Christmas market in Erfurt is one of the most beautiful and popular Christmas markets in Germany. Every year, thousands of visitors travel to the Thuringian state capital to be enchanted by the festive atmosphere. At the romantic Christmas market in Erfurt, there is everything the heart desires: from traditional Christmas trees to mulled wine and bratwurst, through to arts and crafts and Christmas gifts.

The Ferris wheel at the Erfurt Christmas market offers a wonderful panoramic view over the illuminated old town.

The best vantage points are two: up on the cathedral steps or in the gondola of the brightly lit Ferris wheel.

The Whole City Becomes a Christmas Market

The heart of our Christmas market beats on Erfurt’s Domplatz. This is where most visitors head first. In front of the festively illuminated silhouette of the cathedral and St. Severi, dozens of beautifully decorated Christmas chalets stand steaming, glittering and filling the air with wonderful scents. How many cities can compete with a festively lit 81-metre-tall medieval masterpiece? OK, Strasbourg maybe – but that is another story.

From mulled wine to langos and bratwurst, from potato pancakes to spices and gingerbread, every guest is sure to find their favourite food. The inevitable Christmas hats compete with leather goods, Thuringian sausage specialities and Advent decorations in every colour imaginable.

The Wenigemarkt next to the Krämerbrücke is one of the most atmospheric spots at the Erfurt Christmas market.

The Entire Erfurt Old Town Dressed for Christmas

But the Domplatz is just the beginning: almost every small square in the medieval old town, with its half-timbered houses and courtyards, becomes a romantic backdrop for the Christmas season. Each little spot has its very own special charm. A little further out too, at the Hirschgarten and Thomaskirche and at several other squares, something festive is always happening every December.

Even on your way in, you can enjoy the first mulled wine right on the station forecourt – to get your bearings, so to speak. From there, the route continues through the Anger and across the Schlösserbrücke. Along the way, you can choose between chocolate tools, Thuringian bratwurst, waffles, sheepskins, Advent stars and Finnish honey. Soon you will reach the Fischmarkt with its neo-Gothic town hall.

Here, over another mulled wine, you can enjoy the view of the neo-Gothic town hall. A little further on, you stroll past the Wenigemarkt, right next to the famous Krämerbrücke. If you manage to walk past the Obstglühwein at the Augustiner behind the Krämerbrücke without stopping, we take our hats off to you.

And now, the final stretch to Domplatz. There is so much to do here that a whole Christmas market day is never quite long enough.
