Spring in Erfurt

We Are Sitting Outside Again

Leisure-Oriented Planning

Spring is when people sit outside again. It is not that the city is empty during the cold season. On the contrary: the packed Domplatz during the St. Martin’s celebrations, the crowds filling Erfurt’s city centre for the Christmas market, or simply a Monday morning at the Anger. Erfurt is a lively city even in winter. It is just that from autumn onwards, very few people want to sit on chairs and benches under the open sky. This kind of outdoor stay only becomes pleasant again as temperatures rise.

There is no fixed date for the start of the “we are sitting outside again” season. The triggers are sunshine with temperatures above 10 degrees and days that allow most people to plan for leisure – Sundays and public holidays. The outdoor seating areas of restaurants in the city centre are then occupied to the last chair. Streets and paths are so crowded that it is barely possible to get through, and the parks are filled with people who just a few days earlier had only ventured outside wrapped in scarves and hats.

Not Yet Ready for the New Season

None of this comes as a surprise. The first signs of spring appear beforehand. Fresh greenery shows in the city’s parks, birds can be heard again, and clothing shops offer striking discounts on warm garments. But beware: spring also has its setbacks. Here is the Nordbad on an early April day, after March had already announced the end of winter:

Yes, there is snow. It is not only the weather that needs time to adjust. Many residents of Erfurt are also not immediately up to the demands of the new season. Sometimes the jacket is too thick, then the hat is missing after all, and perhaps one should not have sat in front of the café for quite so long – cough…

Spring Takes Its Course

It always takes a while for people to adapt to new circumstances. The arrival of spring is no exception. Yet each year we are accompanied by one certainty: neither a Christmas market nor a lack of seating can stop spring in its tracks.

With that in mind, we wish you a wonderful time in Erfurt’s spring. And if you cannot find a free seat in the city, you can always turn to the awakening nature in the Steiger forest. You can find an article about it here.
