The brand ambassadors are special tourism products that are awarded by Thüringer Tourismus GmbH as part of the implementation of the Thuringian Tourism Strategy 2025. They impress with their outstanding quality and strengthen the “Discover Thuringia” brand.

Christoph Gösel, Managing Director of Thüringer Tourismus GmbH, comments on the award: “With the Petersberg Citadel, we have gained a brand ambassador whose mix of historical experience and high quality of stay goes beyond what other fortresses in Germany offer. Informative and multimedia exhibition concepts, a wide range of gastronomic offerings, overnight accommodations directly on the citadel as well as park-like recreation areas, event areas and great views of our state capital Erfurt make it an attractive travel destination for different age groups and tourists from all over the world.

The Petersberg Citadel once served as a place of defense to protect oneself from enemies. Today it shines in new splendor and offers visitors a fascinating journey through the history of the fortress complex. A highlight of the complex is the commandant's house with its attached visitor center, which invites all age groups to a historical discovery with the multimedia permanent exhibition "The Petersberg - an exciting journey through time". The former monastery church of St. Peter and Paul, a jewel of Romanesque architecture in Thuringia, was lovingly restored for BUGA 2021 and presents the exhibition “Paradise Gardens – Garden Paradises”. In the Stasi documents archive on the fortress there is the opportunity to explore part of the GDR's history up close. Other highlights include the Commander's Garden and the bridge to Bastion Martin, from which visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city of Erfurt.

“The appointment as Thuringia’s new brand ambassador recognizes the Petersberg Citadel as a tourist highlight in the Free State. The versatility of the Petersberg is like no other fortress in Thuringia: with mysterious listening passages, a wide range of exhibitions, adventure offers for the entire family as well as a high-quality catering offer and varied event highlights throughout the year. We are very happy that the infrastructure of the Petersberg Citadel has been significantly strengthened through BUGA 2021 and we are pleased that the citadel is attracting more and more visitors every year. In the coming year we will expand our portfolio of offerings by using virtual reality to resurrect the Benedictine monastery. We would like to make the former monastery tangible for guests and thus create a new, modern offering that provides further incentive to visit Petersberg. “explains Christian Fothe, Managing Director of Erfurt Tourismus und Marketing GmbH.

The city of Erfurt can now look forward to a total of four brand ambassadors. The Cathedral Steps Festival, the egapark and the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Old Synagogue and Mikveh have already been named.

In the future, the Petersberg Citadel will embody the Thuringia-wide motif of “curiosity” and combine of being close to nature , inspiring , shaping culture and accessible Access to the fortress is via a barrier-free panoramic path. The target group who likes to discover new things outside the mainstream will find the perfect and sustainable holiday offer in the travel destination Thuringia in Erfurt with the numerous offers at the Petersberg Citadel. In addition, the Petersberg offers a spacious green oasis for leisure activities of all age groups. Numerous green spaces and gardens, such as the Commander's Garden, provide quiet, beautifully designed retreats to relax and unwind from the hustle and bustle of the city.
