On May 31, 2024 at 2 p.m., the first stumbling block in the state capital Erfurt will be laid at Trommsdorffstrasse 5. In order to inform and discuss the necessary steps for further relocations, the city administration invites you to a citizens' dialogue on May 23, 2024 at 5 p.m. in the Small Synagogue (An der Stadtmünze 4).

How do you lay a stumbling block? Where do I have to register, how much does a stone cost, and what does the city support? The city administration is using the first laying of stumbling blocks as an opportunity to inform all interested citizens, associations and initiatives about the necessary steps for laying stumbling blocks.

The Stolpersteine concept, invented by Gunter Demnig and now looked after by his foundation, is considered the largest decentralized memorial in the world, with 100,000 stones laid. It enables anyone interested to actively participate in a public memorial project for the victims of National Socialism. So far, nine victims in Erfurt have been commemorated in the form of memorial needles. Jutta Hoschek's memorial book "Erased Life" alone lists 453 individual fates in the state capital - there is therefore the possibility of increasing the number of stumbling blocks in the next few years.

“It would be desirable if in Erfurt – as in many cities – there was a central contact person for stumbling blocks from the middle of society,” says the representative for culture, urban development and world heritage, Dr. Tobias J. Knoblich, whose division is responsible for commemoration. “Of course the city administration will support and accompany this process.” Frank Rothe from the “Alliance against Right-Wing Extremism Eisenach” was also invited as an expert. He is the contact person for laying stumbling blocks in the Wartburg city, advises applicants, informs the responsible administrative departments and accompanies the manufacturing and laying process.

In order to estimate the number of visitors, please register by email to dezernat06@erfurt.de . Entry is free.
