Strong water turbidity in the Gera due to construction work on the paper weir

Due to the construction work to renovate the paper weir in the Gera, there is currently unavoidable persistent water turbidity between Dreienbrunnenbad and Luisenpark on weekdays.

During the work, larger amounts of river sediments are removed from the river bed using appropriate technology to regulate the river bed above the actual weir. This also mobilizes fine particles in the sediment, which are immediately driven off during dredging and only settle down again very slowly. This turbidity can also reach the inner city waters (Walkstrom, Bergstrom, Breitstrom) via the mountain stream inlet. The turbidity is merely an optical change in the water that is harmless to health.

The construction work on the paper weir began in 2022 and is divided into a series of river construction measures. The measures serve to improve flood protection for the city of Erfurt and provide better control options for the flood ditch and all inner-city watercourses. The client and developer for the Free State of Thuringia is the Thuringian State Office for the Environment, Mining and Nature Conservation (TLUBN).
