New district in Erfurt

The Outer East Town

The Outer Oststadt is a development project by the city of Erfurt. This is about something that has become rare in the urban area of the state capital: space.

The area leads in an arc from the area of the old slaughterhouse on Greifswalder Straße via the Alten Posthof and Iderhoffstraße to the Zughafen cultural station. The planned Tower East of Intercity Erfurt will provide a connection to the city center here.

A huge area that has already been cleared or built on, but is still partly influenced by its previous use.

We focused our attention on the old municipal utility area and the freight station. The site is located south of Iderhoffstrasse. From here we take Adam Gottschalk Street to the Kalkreiße industrial area, which is slightly elevated. Here you can get a first look at the area.

There is access to the freight station area via a dirt road. This has been significantly reduced in size in recent decades. Nevertheless, many freight trains still use part of the area. The dimensions of the area can also be seen from here. Yes, something new could arise here:

A passing train reminds us of the significance of the sign that reads: “No entry allowed for unauthorized persons”

We are looking for a less dangerous access to the public utility site. This can be found as a junction from Iderhoffstrasse. We reach an old road via a trail.

This leads us to the actual municipal utility area. What is planned here is nothing less than an attractive residential area with a district park. So if at some point it says “we’ll meet in Ostpark”, then maybe we’ll walk through this gate:

So far, not much has been seen of these projects. Meanwhile, residents are creating facts when it comes to the use of open spaces.

We turn to the freight yard. Its site is a little higher than the municipal utility area. A look back at Ruhrstrasse shows that the city's growth was stopped here by the former industrial site. A continuation of the road seems to be planned:

The freight station itself is visibly in a process of transformation. With the train port as a new place of cultural life in Erfurt, this is partially completed. The previous situation still appears elsewhere, although it is often already without function

Conclusion:

Things remain exciting around the Outer Oststadt. Even if there are already finished sections like the Old Posthof, it is not entirely clear what the whole thing will look like. A lot of things still end here without it being clear what happens next.
