The Willrode forester's lodge

800 years of history in the middle of the Willroda Forest

Every Erfurt resident has heard the name Willrode

But where exactly the historic forester's lodge in Willrode is located is no longer a matter of general knowledge. The impressive building complex a few kilometers behind the Haarberg and the easily audible motorway is not entirely new. The walls have been at this location since the 11th century. The castle-like character with the moat and the chapel, which looks similar to a defensive tower, is no coincidence. Far from the city and in the middle of the forest, a certain level of defensiveness was definitely appropriate.

The entire area is surrounded by a massive wall made of field stones. A massive bridge suitable for cars crosses the moat at the main entrance. At the back you can escape safely into the surrounding nature via a small wooden bridge.

Various owners managed the estate; The city of Erfurt acquired the property in 1573. An old, weathered boundary stone still documents its former affiliation with the city of Erfurt. The site now belongs to the Thuringian State Forestry Agency.

How the facility affects visitors depends heavily on the weather. The friendly aura in the sunshine transforms into a completely mystical atmosphere in the autumn mist. But you don't have to let that put you off: the Willrode forester's house is a place of residence for some people and a place of work for others. This is where the Thuringian Forestry Office in Willrode resides, which is responsible for the management of 19,000 hectares of surrounding forest.

The forester's house is known to the wider public for a very special offer: in the game shop you can get fresh game meat from the surrounding forests. Roe deer, wild boar or deer are ideal for preparing delicious game dishes. In addition to the sales offering, there are other regular events such as Christmas tree cutting, small markets and cultural highlights from choir performances to summer music festivals. The tower-like castle chapel does not date from the early days of the forester's house. It was probably only built around 1495. The weather vane on the chapel roof bears this year as an inscription. Inside the chapel you will find a small exhibition on the history of the complex on the opening days - usually during events. The arched frieze directly in the archway of the entrance is impressive.

There is also a lot to discover in the forest around the forester's lodge. Orchards, insect hotels and fresh fruit in late summer provide habitat and food for many animals and some variety for people.
