Erfurt firefighter Marcel Thierbach improves his time in the extreme stair run in Berlin

Marcel Thierbach from the Erfurt professional fire department was able to improve his performance at the Firefighter Stairrun in Berlin from last year. This time he had a new comrade at his side.

The Firefighter Stairrun to the 39th floor of the Park Inn Hotel on Alexanderplatz is firmly on Marcel Thierbach's calendar. On May 4, 2024, he competed against strong international competition together with Tom Spaleck from the Kirchheim Volunteer Fire Department. Both achieved an impressive 8th place out of 400 registered teams. Both even took fifth place in their age group.

Both of them completed the flight of 770 steps or 110 meters in altitude, including equipment weighing 25 to 30 kilograms, in exactly 7:14.7 minutes. This meant Thierbach was a full 19 seconds faster than in 2023 with his partner Bert Raabe (Jena Fire Department).

Marcel Thierbach and Tim Spaleck actually only met on the way from Erfurt to Berlin. “The confirmation that I could take part in the competition again this year came at very short notice. Since Bert Raabe was ill, I met his twin brother Tom through Tim Spaleck, who is in the basic course at the Erfurt fire department,” says Marcel Thierbach.

Marcel Thierbach is always looking for sporting challenges. It wasn't until September 2023 that he won the triathlon relay at the German Fire Brigade Team Championships in Ratingen - together with Tim Spaleck and Chris Lehnhardt, by the way.
