What does “erfordia turrita” mean?

“Erfordia Turrita” is a Latin expression that refers to the city of Erfurt.
  1. “Erfordia” is the Latin name for Erfurt.
  2. “Turrita” means “towered” or “rich in towers”.

When put together, “Erfordia Turrita” means something like “Erfurt, the city of towers” ​​or “Erfurt rich in towers”.

This nickname refers to the characteristic silhouette of the city of Erfurt, which is characterized by numerous church towers and other historical towers. The most famous of these are certainly the towers of Erfurt Cathedral and Severikirche, but there are many other historic towers in the old town. Nine of these towers can be climbed during the Monument Days in 2024.
