The Marbach
A stream from Marbach
Visible in the heart of the old village center
The Marbach is a rather short watercourse in Erfurt. Until a few years ago it also ran underground and therefore invisible through Erfurt before it flows into the Gera.
We start at the beginning and it's not that easy to find. The course of the stream can be clearly seen on Käferberg in Marbach. But where the source is is difficult to find out, especially in times of lush vegetation. But it's not that important either. The Marbach originates somewhere here:
It really becomes visible at the pond square. As the name suggests, the watercourse forms a small pond here in the heart of the old village center of Marbach.
New bed for the Marbach
In the village it goes sometimes hidden, sometimes clearly visible past old farms, streets and modern residential areas towards Erfurt.
The renatured part of the Marbach begins in front of federal highway 4. In contrast to the busy federal highway and Bodenfeldallee in the immediate vicinity, this one makes a wildly romantic impression.
The last section of the Marbach then leads along the Road of Nations to the Gera. The fact that the stream flows visibly through the city again is due to Buga 21. As part of the renovation of the entire northern Geraa , a new bed for the Marbach will be created here in 2021.
Fate of other Erfurt streams
The mouth of the Gera still looks like this in February 2019:
After the renaturation then like this:
And that brings us to the end of our trip. Anyone who wants to visit the Marbach should accept that it often has no water. It therefore shares the fate of other Erfurt streams such as: B. the Wiesenbach and the Weißbach . But whether with water or without: The Marbach is a stream from Marbach and without the Marbach Marbach probably wouldn't exist either.
