The Lütsche dam

Chill out, swim and maybe do a little hiking

Come on, let's go to Lütsche!

The Lütsche Dam, usually just called Lütsche, is located a short distance below Oberhof, beautifully embedded in the Thuringian Forest. Any hustle and bustle that you may have brought with you disappears on the last stretch of road from Frankenhain to the dam. The path leads through the forest, with a deep valley on the left and the spruce-lined mountain slope on the right. There are two larger parking spaces: one is right next to the dam wall, the second is at the end of the reservoir. Parking is free.

Holiday apartments can be rented in the house on the western bank. Lakeside terrace included!

Water fun in summer

A look at the water reveals what you can do well here. SUPs glide across the lake between inflatable boats, with a few swimmers in between. Almost the entire shore is suitable for chilling and swimming. The west bank is just a very narrow strip of land. On the east bank and at the south end, the grass strips are wide enough to accommodate many guests in a relaxed manner.

The water is refreshingly cool, unfortunately not entirely clear. There have been complaints about low visibility at depth in diving portals for years. But that doesn't stop the fun in the bath. You can also visit the small bay at the campsite with children - of course not without supervision. There is no lifeguard or lifeguard here. The Lütsche is just a beautiful lake in the forest.

A snack bar near the dam is open on weekends; Otherwise, when the weather is good, there is coffee and cake for the bathers at the campsite. So if you want to be sure you don't starve, bring your picnic basket with you when you go swimming! In general, the campsite is very popular; The view of the forest-lined lake gives you a bit of a Canadian feeling. A SUP rental provides you with the popular sports equipment. A hiking destination all year round

A hiking destination for the whole year

Hiking is also very good here. There are several routes through the forests. From Oberhof you can reach the 2 kilometer long reservoir on the hiking trail through the “Burned Stone”. In earlier centuries the raft ditch ran where the water is dammed up today. Felled tree trunks from the ridge regions of the Thuringian Forest were rafted on it to Lusienthal, where the wood was further processed or simply used as fuel. The “Flößgrabenweg” still follows the old route for 23 kilometers.

Where is the Lütsche?

The Lütsche Dam is an artificial reservoir in the Thuringian Forest, more precisely near the town of Frankenhain in the Ilm district, Thuringia. It is located about 50 kilometers southwest of Erfurt and 15 kilometers west of Oberhof.

Size and location

The Lütsche dam covers a water area of around 40 hectares and has a storage volume of around 2.1 million cubic meters. The dam lies at an altitude of around 590 meters above sea level and is surrounded by the mountains of the Thuringian Forest. This location makes the Lütsche Dam a popular destination for nature lovers and hikers.

Story

The Lütsche dam was built between 1935 and 1938. It primarily supplied steam locomotives in Erfurt with important industrial water. Without water there is no steam.
Today the Lütsche, as the dam is usually called, is actually just a recreational area. A very popular one at that!
