The Kiliani Park in Erfurt

Modern design with a past

Honoring the deceased

The Kiliani Park forms the outermost tip of the Northern Geraue . And just like them, the park is undergoing its final redesign as part of Buga 2021. But even in the previous decades, there have been repeated renovations here and homage to the respective era. Some things disappear, others remain.

During the GDR era, a memorial was erected here to the former KPD chairman Ernst Thälmann, who was murdered in 1944. A year after Thälmann, around 50 German soldiers lost their lives around the site of today's park in the last days of World War II in the spring of 1945.

They are also remembered here in the form of a small facility. A closer look shows that death plays a role in Kiliani Park more than in other parks in the city. Part of today's park is located on the site of the community's former cemetery. An obelisk in a central location is more visible. This serves to commemorate the fallen soldiers of both world wars in the districts of Kiliani and Viti, from which Gispersleben emerged.

Embellished and improved with the past

Let's turn back to life. The northernmost part houses a small basketball court and a soccer field. This is a result of the renovation work in 2021.

Geraradweg was relocated in some places in Kilianipark Erfurt.

The Gera is also experiencing another profound change. What today seems like pure nature

it looked like this a few years ago:

The bridge over the Mühlgraben has also disappeared and been replaced by a new building. Cyclists who still remember the old structure say thank you every time they cross it: Thank you, dear planners and builders, that we can now just drive straight over it.

The Kilanipark, located in the Gispersleben district, has been redesigned and has been beautified and improved in many areas, but it also does not forget the past.

These memorial steles are reminiscent of the old cemetery of the Kiliani community in Erfurt Gispersleben.
