Gera Untermhaus with Otto Dix exhibition and Hofwiesenpark

A beautiful piece of Gera

As a district name, Untermhaus sounds – special. And that’s what this part of Gera is too. The location on the White Elster, the old buildings, small streets, all of that is not something you necessarily associate with Gera.

On the other side of the river is the Hofwiesenpark, a huge leisure area. One of the main exhibition areas for the 2007 Federal Garden Show. There is also an indoor swimming pool with a “fun pool” section and a sports stadium on the site. And lots of space:

With the Gera art collection in the Orangery we come to the cultural part of our excursion. The focus of the exhibition is Otto Dix's late work, which should come as no surprise: the artist's birthplace is nearby in the Untermhaus district.

There are also changing special exhibitions in a wonderful ambience in the orangery.

Conclusion:

Not everyone has to take full advantage of the mixture of district architecture, leisure activities and culture. If you want to spend a nice day in Erfurt, you can skip Otto Dix and his district and go straight to the leisure pool. A walk through the park followed by a visit to an exhibition is also conceivable, etc.

The whole thing can be reached from Erfurt in about an hour. Both by train or car. For the latter, there is a spacious parking lot on site.
