The supplementary period for the Erfurt City Cycling 2024 ended on Sunday, September 8th, 2024. This also means that the official final result has been determined. As part of the opening bike tour, Mayor Andreas Horn demanded a new record of 600,000 km. The people of Erfurt took up the challenge and cycled an impressive 703,325 kilometers - despite the high temperatures.

That's an impressive 121,712 kilometers more than in 2023. This also benefits the environment, in two senses: 117 tons of CO 2 avoided and the forest in the Willroder Forest received 703 new trees - because we also donated the environmental protection in previous years. and Nature Conservation Office one tree for every 1,000 kilometers driven. A new record was also set in terms of the number of participants: 3,592 cyclists, divided into 187 teams, recorded at least one ride. A total of 78,624 trips were recorded in the mileage books. “I am overwhelmed and would like to thank everyone who contributed to this excellent result,” says Mayor Andreas Horn. “Each and every individual has not only done something for their own health and climate protection, but also makes an important contribution to reforestation in the Willroder Forest.”

The awards ceremony will take place in the Willroder Forest on October 24th from 2 p.m. Hard-working helpers are still being sought to plant the 703 trees.

In addition to schools and companies, clubs will also be honored this year for the first time. Due to the large amount of data, the evaluation of the club challenge will still take some time.

background

City cycling is a campaign by the Climate Alliance in which cities, teams and individual cyclists work together to set an example for more cycling promotion, climate protection and livable communities. They not only pedal hard for themselves, but also for their team or their community and compete with each other. The city of Erfurt will take part in the campaign for the 15th time in 2024. Every year, one tree is planted for every 1,000 kilometers driven. In autumn 2023, 581 sessile oaks, English oaks and wild fruits were planted in the Willroder Forest.
